There’s a brown girl in the ring, Tra, la, la, la,la

Show me a motion, Tra, la, la, la, la

The lyrics above are part of a  childhood game we used to play in the Caribbean. A group of us would join hands and form a ring. One girl would stand in the center of the ring while we sang and clapped our hands,” There’s a brown girl in the ring/ tra, la, la, la, la.” Then we would  ask the girl in the ring to “Show me your motion.” She would perform her favourite dance move before choosing someone else to stand in the center.

Our blog reflects our desire to see the brown girl in the center of the ring–the center of the narrative. We seek to create a global online community for black women to share their stories. We want to see her motion–we want to celebrate black womanhood and the variety of ways that it is lived out.
